“Finish, so I can be done with this already ridiculous ass conversation,” I sneered. This man was an asshole, a big one.
“I’m going home to Greece, within the next few days after I wrap up a few things with the night clubs I’ve bought. I want to take Alex,” he held up a hand to halt my words before they ever escaped my lips. “I’ve had a court order drawn up, and I’m legally seizing Alexander by the time I leave on Wednesday. However, I want to offer you a chance to stay in his life and have full access to him.”
I couldn’t believe the words that were falling from his pretty lips. This man had already destroyed any chances I had keeping of keeping Alex. This dinner had just been a way to get under my skin and watch me squirm; it had been his sick idea of a formality, I supposed. “I must have stupid written on my forehead, Darien. What’s the catch, because I know damn well there’s a catch.”
He leaned back in his chair, surveying me. This time it wasn’t in a way to make me feel uncomfortable. It was more like he was sizing me up; it was like he knew his next words were going to start World War 3 and he wanted to choose them as perfectly as could. Which was a shame because he failed miserably at it.
“If you become my mistress, you’ll have full access to Alexander. He will never leave your sight, Allanah.” His face never changed. He was completely serious, and completely demented might I add.
I could feel a faint coming on but I stopped it and stood up. This dinner with this beyond smug and arrogant but deliciously handsome man was over. Just because you looked like God had created the perfect dark haired version of Chris Hemsworth didn’t matter to me at all.
“Darien, you have yourself a first class flight to hell, you will never get in these panties. And you will never, ever, get my nephew. I’ll see you in court, you smug bastard.”
As I turned and whipped out of the restaurant, I could hear him chuckling. “We’ll see, Allanah.”
Now, I really hated the way he said my name.
Chapter 3
The night I got home, I had papers concerning the custody of Alex waiting for me. Cindy gave me sympathetic looks and finally I sent her home. I couldn’t deal with her pitying glances. I had never ever wanted anyone’s pity. I had no need for that.
I watched Alex sleep for the longest time after Cindy left. He was so small and new. Darien was right about one thing. I had a lack of family happening in my life. I’d been trying to track down my dad for years but never had any luck. I refused to think about how things would’ve been had he been around.
By the time Wednesday rolled around, I was losing my mind. I was ready to leap out of my skin at the least little sound. I found myself getting Cindy over to watch Alex and taking a taxi to the hospital to see Dana.
A nurse was coming out of the room when I arrived and stated there had been no change. There was just a glint of light coming from the blinds that were closed in her room, and I could barely see her face. I moved to open them before sitting on the edge of her bed, gently.
She looked so peaceful, probably the most peaceful she’d ever been in her life. “I need you to wake up, Dana.”
She of course never stirred but I kept talking just in case it might help. How many movies had we all seen where the patient came through from the sound of a loved one’s voice. “Do you remember that day we went to the beach. We couldn’t take one more minute in that damn apartment with mom, shooting up. God, her arms looked so terrible. I just remember you telling me to just run away with you Dana.”
My eyes were starting to sting from thinking about all the crap we’d been through. I got up and went back to window and stared down into the hospital parking lot. “My point is Dana, you always had a plan. You were the one with a plan and we’re in serious trouble. I need you to wake the hell up so we can keep, Alex.”
I wiped frantically at my face. My hair was sticking to it now from the tears. I hated crying. I hated how it made me feel.
Small.
Useless.
I leaned over and kissed Dana on her forehead. I could barely remember what our last argument had been about. “I love you, Dana. Please wake up soon.”
I left the hospital feeling defeated. It was in my walk. It was in the way I was constantly rubbing my hands together trying to ease the tension out of myself. And then there was worry.
I had had no one until this shining light and ray of hope had be given to me. Someone had literally handed me sunshine in a bottle and now Darien Kiriakis wanted to just take that away from me.
Pausing outside of the building he worked in, I looked up. It reached all the way into the New York skyline, steel and glass. I was sure he was standing up there somewhere, looking out over the city thinking of it as some sort of kingdom waiting to be bought. Thinking of the citizens like cattle, as objects waiting to be bought. I couldn’t let Alex grow up thinking that was how people were supposed to be. I was going to do whatever I had to do to keep the only good thing I’d ever had in my life.
Walking in the lobby I noticed the Greek architecture. There were textured marble collums and a few busts of the Greek gods. Darien probably thought of himself as some sort of Zeus. There was a lack of color in the place, mostly a lot of white.
I strolled up to the reception desk. I took her in, white girl, early twenties. “I need to see Darien Kiriakis.”
She simply looked up, and then looked back down to her task at hand. Clearly she didn’t know I was about to cause a fucking scene in Kiriakis Industries. “Ma’am…I’m having a shit month. I need to see your boss. Maybe you don’t know who I am…”
She parted her painted lips and spoke. “And….who are you?”
The flippant way in which she said that almost made me snatch her ass across the desk. I calmed my center before I went the hell of. This Molly Ringwald look alike was not worth the jail time.
“Bit….” It had almost came out. Almost. “Miss, I’m Alexander Kiriakis’s aunt, Allanah Haughton.”
Her face dropped and she couldn’t catch it. She stood up then. “I’m so sorry miss. Take this, miss. It’s an access badge, it’ll lead you straight to Mr. Kiriakis’s office on the 18th floor.”
She handed over the badge and pointed me to the elevator. I didn’t even say thank you. She’d almost made me loose my damn cool in this place. I stepped into the elevator ready to face this asshole of a man, I secretly wanted to stab to death. But, if I had to jump through one more hoop, I’d do it for Alex.
*
The elevator finally dinged signaling that I had reached the correct floor. I stepped off and saw that their was only one set of doors on the entire floor. How very authoritarian of him. He had to have an entire floor to his pompous self.
I started to knock, but what the hell. He’d barged into my life and caused a scene. Why not return the fucking favor?
As I entered, I came across the sight of him with his back to his the door. He was gazing out over the New York City skyline, probably plotting world domination like the sadistic bastard he was. The reflection of his eyes caught mine and I instantly knew that he could see me just as clearly as I could see him. I watched him take a sip of something probably 50 years old and expensive. I was a bar tender and he looked like he drank only the best scotch. He was a top shelf motherfucker.
“Do you knock?” A voice snapped me from my thoughts and I glanced to my right to see his cousin, Cassie casually lounging on the couch. She had on a tight black dress that was just a bit to revealing.
I smirked. “For what, he’s not busy…”
She cut her eyes to Darien and back to me. “Americans.”
It was clear that this bitch had a problem and it was clear that the problem she had was with me. I was more than happy to drag her ass by her hair.
I reeled crazy Lana back in cause she was ready to rear her head; and if she did, someone was going to fall 17 floors. “You know, Cassie…” I stressed every syllable of her fucking name. “Me and Darian need some privacy to discuss our nephew.”
She
looked at me like I had the audacity to address her and then to Darien. She stood her skank ass up once he stated that she should go and grabbed a blazer for her ratchet ass outfit.
“As always, nice to see you Antionette,” she said in passing.
“Bitch, you know good and fucking well what my name is. But I’m gonna let you take out the garbage or whatever it is you do for your cousin.” I waved bye to her and rolled my eyes.
I heard Darien chuckle. “She’s a very nice person, Allanah. Once the two of you get to know each other.”
He came down from where he was standing and sat down on the couch. I continued to stand. I knew in the deepest parts of my mind that I’d lost my damn marbles for the words about to tumble out of my mouth next.
“Funny,” I cleared my thought. “Anyway, I’ve given your offer some thought, Mr. Kiriakis.”
He watched me with hooded eyes; the look was pure predatory. He knew that he’d won some small battle already and he wanted to enjoy the moment.
“I have conditions,” I had to get this shit out or I was going to faint again.
“They are?”
“I’ll move to Greece with you. I won’t fight you for Alex. But I will be in his life. I’ll raise my nephew. I want him to grow up grounded in the fact that he is a normal boy, not some prince. I also ask that maybe we take vacations together; again I want normalcy for Alex. You will bring Dana to Greece to be taken care of and so that Alex can still be near her….kids need their mothers. And finally….I don’t want Cassie anywhere near my nephew.”
His eyebrow lifted at my last statement. “For all those things, you’ll be my mistress.”
“Yes.”
I took a deep breath.
“No money?”
“What? Why would I ask for money?”
He shrugged. “Your sister….”
I stopped him right there. “We are different.”
He nodded. “It was the same with me and my brother as well, Allanah.”
I shifted my weight onto my other leg. I hated standing here under his scrutiny but he had a faraway look in his eyes. “What happened to Alex’s father?”
The question lifted him from his thoughts. “He died instantly in the car accident that put Dana in her coma.”
“And that’s how you found us, isn’t it.”
“It was one of many bread crumbs,” he smiled a bit and stood. I couldn’t remember if I’d seen him smile in any our interactions. I took note that his smile seemed to be saddened by the thoughts of his brother. It was time for me to make an exit. I did not want to care about how sad his smile seemed; I didn’t want to think of this man having any sort of emotions.
As he walked closer. “We should seal our deal, Allanah?”
He was saying my name sexy like…..I was not a fan. My coochie said otherwise.
“Oh, really?” I played coy.
“Yes, Allanah.”
His voice was sex personified.
“And I seal my deals with women I plan to have with kisses.”
I came to my senses, stepped away and blew this motherfucker a kiss over my shoulder. “Later, bruh!”
He seemed confused and I heard him whisper to himself, “Bruh?”
Chapter 4
Greece was beautiful. It was calm and quiet. It wasn’t New York City. Darien’s home was of course on the coast. His family had a huge estate. They were loaded; his great grandfather had been a shipping magnet and over time the business had evolved into real estate, banking, and more.
Alex would have everything he ever needed. He would grow up completely different than how his mother and I had. I couldn’t exactly see how that was going to be the worst thing ever but I didn’t want to see it either. Darien got on my damn nerves with his entitled ass and I didn’t want that rubbing off on my nephew.
I danced around with him in the nursery of Darien’s private house. It was a little bit further from the estate. He liked his privacy and so did I. I wondered if his family or even that bitch of a cousin of his knew about the deal that we’d struck in order to get Alex here. Darien wasn’t the type to go screaming that he’d conned a woman into sleeping with him. In fact, I was sure all he had to do was look in their directions and that was it. Panties were dropped in a heartbeat; hearts were broken in seconds. But now with me, because I saw his monkey ass for what he really was.
“You are so good with him,” came a soft voice and it interrupted my thoughts. I turned and met Helena’s wizened eyes. She was an older lady, with her graying hair pulled back into a tight bun, dressed in a black dress.
“Thank you,” I held him close, I was still wary about everyone. Here I was in just a tshirt and no pants, with an infant and defensive as hell.
“I can take him for you now, ma’am…” she made no movement to take Alex. I looked down on him, his little blue eyes began to look sleepy. His tiny mouth quivered, and he gave a yawn.
It made me realize how tired I was. Slowly, I handed over Alex to his nanny. I’d been so pissed when Darien had introduced her to me. I’d told him that it wasn’t normal for a baby to have a nanny but now as I was handing him over, I could feel the tiredness of the last few months catching up.
“Are you taking advantage of Helena,” Darien’s voice filled the room and I saw Alex’s eyes searching for him. He had been spending time with him and it kind of sickened me how Alex had taken to him.
I hated sharing.
“She needs some rest, Darien. Now you take her to a good breakfast. Me and Master Alex will have a delightful time. Go on, shoo…”
Darien took my hand and led me from the room. I caught a quick glance of Helena sitting down into the nursery rocker with the baby before being completely pulled out of view. Darien led me down the hallways of his home to where breakfast had been prepared out on the balcony that over looked the sea. He had been doing this a lot, like it was perfectly damn normal. Just taking my hand and steering me wherever he wanted me to go whenever he wanted me to go.
“Sit down and eat…” I surveyed the food before me.
Eggs, bacon, and fruit.
“I don’t like ya’ll orange juice. It don’t taste right.” I sat down anyway.
He chuckled. “I know, so I had some brought in from America, just for you.”
My face showed surprise. “Thank….thank you. That’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever done for me.”
He shrugged. “If orange juice will get you to like me just a little bit better than I’ll buy all of Florida.”
I cracked a smile. It didn’t mean I was cracking right. I wasn’t going to make smiling at him a damn habit. This was a business arrangement for Alex’s sake. I needed to keep telling myself these things because nothing was ever going to happen with Darien. I knew his type from New York. He had that old money thought process, everything belonged to him but he could dispose of people at an instant. That was why I wouldn’t tell him anything about myself, anything real. What would be the purpose. Who knew how long this so called arrangement was going to go on for anyway. I was praying that Alex wouldn’t be eighteen and these shenanigans were still going on.
“So, tonight there’s a dinner. Pretty much in your honor and Alex’s. They want to meet this American I’ve hidden away.”
I rubbed my arms in thought realizing it was a bit chilly out here. I wasn’t ready for party’s in my honor and shit. It sounded like a disaster. I also didn’t want to seem ungrateful not that Darien would care if I was.
“I’m not anybody special, there’s no need for that,” I watched his face change.
He stood and came over to me and bent down. I was extremely aware of my bare shaven legs and the fact that I only had on a pair of underwear with a big gray tshirt that had a picture of the Brooklyn bridge on it. He took my hands in his. Him and his damn hands, I didn’t want to be aware of his hands and how large they were and how they dwarfed my own.
He turned them over, my hands, and gave them a gentle kiss. “No matter…this mistrust
we have between us. I know you don’t actually like me….I’m not sure I like you either Allanah…” Why did he have to say my name, I hated the way it tumbled from his goddamn lips, like silk blessing concrete. “You are special to me, and most definitely special to Alex. He is my heir. I don’t plan on having children. I haven’t found anyone I like that much. But my family owes you a debt it can’t repay for watching over Mikos’ son.”
I didn’t really know what to say. “A party in my honor, huh?”
He smiled again; it was less sad this time.
Chapter 5
The cook had to make me more eggs. I hadn’t had a real appetite in months and I figured it must have been this Grecian air. I didn’t care; I wanted my thighs to get back to being thick because stress had been eating my ass alive. Literally stress had taken away my butt. My attitude had perked up after talking to Darien. We kind of had a mutual understanding between us now.
We both still hated each other. I chuckled, and he looked over his phone, at me. I rolled my eyes and continued to eat. A figure appeared out of nowhere and I thought it was Helena but saw it was Cassie. She’d snaked her way into Darien’s extra-large cottage. Cassie was dressed in a loose-fitting turquoise top, jeans and matching turquoise heels and had some sort of Chanel looking shawl decked over her shoulders. The sun was hitting her face and casting sinister shadows on her face and I briefly wondered if she were related to Satan himself. I had to stop the eye roll that threatened to overcome me.
“Morning, Cassie,” he stood up and invited her to join us.
“Don’t the two of you look cozy this morning,” she smiled at me and Darien poured her a cup of coffee.
I just kept on looking at her. Mostly because I wanted to know why she was hear in the first place. Did this woman know that I absolutely couldn’t stand her. The sight of her made me want to vomit for some reason.
“Thanks, Dare Dare,” she sipped her coffee and he sat back down.
“What brings you by?” He finally asked after catching my expression.
